Dementia Care

90-120 Minute Sessions

Dementia Care is all about creating a connection with your loved one and providing recreation based activities and services which intend to enhance the quality of their life (and that of their families) living with various forms of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s Disease, Stroke or Parkinson’s related memory loss. This is a multi-faceted approach, treating the whole person and encompassing various techniques and activities to relate to your loved one on an individual basis. There are no ‘cookie cutter’ answers to individuals in special circumstances. These sessions may include time to socialize, movement based activities, emotional connection, reminiscing, creative projects, cognitive stimulation and/or leisure education.

Physical Program

30 Minute Sessions

The old saying “If you don’t use it, you lose it” is key to physical health and physical ability. Taking into consideration clientele’s coginiton, abilities, strengths, weaknesses, and personal goals, safe physical activities can help to maintain or improve physical functioning for large motor skills, small motor skills, hand-eye coordination and/or balance.

Some examples of physical activities may include ball toss, balloon badminton/volleyball, seated exercises, outdoor walks or dancing.

Physical programming can be included in other visitations.

Leisure Education & Socialization

60-120 Minute Sessions

Being part of a community is important to each of us. At times our interactions with the ‘outside’ world shrinks, which may contribute to a fear of being with others or in certain situations. Providing assurance or continued re-assurance to clientele in social situations and providing ways which may increase involvement within their surroundings helps to encourage more engagement in life or activities available to them. As a Therapeutic Recreationist, we are trained for this. Whether your loved one is failing to cope, feeling overwhelm or possibly depressed, Leisure Education can be a way to bring increased meaning to their days at home in retirement living or in Long Term Care.

Leisure Education may involve finding new activities that interest and engage clientele or discovering new ways with old favourites!
